What is Literacy?

Literacy is the ability to read and write. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills are essential to literacy development.

Phonemic Awareness

This is the ability to identify and manipulate the phonemes, or sounds, in words.

Phonics instruction includes teaching how letters correspond to sounds and how to use letters in reading and writing.

Reading Fluency

This refers to the ability to decode (or read) words accurately, quickly, and with proper expression.

Readers must have a store knowledge of vocabulary words to retrieve meaning as they read.

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the goal of learning to read. The mastery of each of the four previous skills leads to comprehension.
